We are in a tight spot y’all.
No matter your feelings about the direction of our country, it is difficult to focus as we wait for the official results and the aftermath of the 2020 election.
When I get anxious, I always turn to music. And I’m reminded of a favorite song of mine, “Waitin’ for a Superman” by The Flaming Lips.
The lead singer, Wayne Coyne, wrote the song when his father was dying of cancer.
…my older brother and I would do these runs around the lake and we would talk while we exercise and rode bicycles and stuff. I was very despondent and scared about this idea, this thing that was happening to our family or whatever. … I asked him, “Is it getting heavy?” and his response was, “I thought it was already.” … That’s what I think is in [this song], it’s you being scared but you accidentally being brave, you not thinking you can handle it and you kind of on one level handling at the same time.
It has been a year like no other in my lifetime, and you know what? I’m a little scared. But maybe we all need some accidental bravery.
Tell everybody waiting for a Superman
That they should try to hold on best they can
He hasn't dropped them, forgot them, or anything
It's just too heavy for a Superman to lift
(Piano Breakdown - hands down the best part of the song)
Here is the thing. It may be too heavy for Superman, but if we can figure out how to stick together, it won’t be too heavy for us.
Have a fantastic week everyone.
